Keeping Time

Through thirty years or forty,
or the time it takes to blink,
I am still my mother's daughter
though we still walk out of sync.

My steps were slow and stumbling
when I dangled from her hand,
as she raced along the pavements
like a child across the sand.

Now, as my step has quickened,
and I thought to match her pace,
with a shock I find her slower
in our hare and tortoise race.

The hand that stretched behind her,
that I had to run to hold,
is the same that halts my hurry
and reminds me she is old.

If I drag my feet or gallop
I can never overtake;
at a sprint or at a saunter
I must travel in her wake.

My daughter's hand in my hand,
I stay my pace and think
today we'll walk together,
and I feel afraid to blink:

There are thirty years between us,
our hands a fragile link,
she is still her mother's daughter
and today we walk in sync.

Burst Ballons

Frog-jelly-cake
she wanted, with three candles.
was his suggested game.

Since the children grew
too old for parties,
Birthdays never will be

quite the same.

On Walter De La Mare

Leaning to catch the slight light
Of the lamp, by her bedside chair,
I sit and read to my daughter
From Walter de la Mare;

The book I loved as a child,
That I read and reread as I grew.
Its pages are brown at the edges
But its cover and spine are as new.

Very old are his words and the lines that break
From my lips to her sleepy ears,
But they sound with an effortless freshness,
Skipping across the years.

Letting Go

Water like death
is a great leveller.

Brother and sister
ready on land
to bicker and tease
are on equal terms in the pool.

They give and take

love and respect;
are fish below the surface.

Their mother, too long on dry land,
has evolved and lost scale.
The children are out of her depth.
She gave them their first swim
long before they breathed air,
feeding their primitive skill
in gentle darkness.

Water like birth
is a great divider.

Peace Talks

Three people crossed their fingers
Round a table for a parley,
One said 'Kings', another 'Pax',
The third cried 'Barley'.

Three people left the table,
Shook hands and went to play.
Each had offered different words,
Each had the same to say.
