Big Party
New York - New York City Mayor Michael
Bloomberg officially recognized the celebration
of Novruz in New York City with a reception
at Gracie Mansion, the official residence
of the Mayor of New York. The event took
place the evening of Monday, March 26,
2007 in Manhattan. Prominent members of
the Azerbaijani-American community as
well as the Iranian, Pakistani and Afghani
communities in New York also attended.
The Azerbaijan Society of America was a proud sponsor of Mayor
Bloomberg's Novruz party and ASA was thanked
publicly by Mayor Bloomberg during his
speech.
The Gracie Mansion party was attended by ASA President Ms Tomris
Azeri, who also brought several guests
with her to Gracie Mansion, including
Azerbaijani Consul General to LA Mr. Elin
Suleymanov and Mrs. Suleymanov, and Mr.
Ramin Mammadov, representing Committee
of Azerbaijanis Living Abroad. Also in
attendance was Ambassador Aghsin Mehtiyev,
Permanent Representative of the Republic
of Azerbaijan to the United Nations, and
Mrs. Mehtiyev.

The
evening before the Mayor's party,
on Sunday, March 25, 2007 the
Azerbaijan Society of America
held its own Novruz 2007 festivities
with a party for over 300 people
in the ballroom of the historic
Grand Prospect Hall in Brooklyn,
NY.

"We are proud to play a part in having the Mayor of New York
recognize the Novruz holiday with such
a grand party at his official residence.
It is important that we continue to make
New York and all of the United States
aware of Azerbaijan, its people, and its
importance in the world community. ASA
is dedicated to this and will continue
its efforts on even bigger levels,"
said Ms. Azeri.

the Azerbaijan Society of America held

New York Mayor, Michael Bloomberg sent a letter of congratulations
and support to the ASA and Brooklyn Borough
President Marty Markowitz sent an official
Proclamation which declared Sunday, March
25 2007, "Official Day of Celebration
of the Novruz Holiday by the Azerbaijan
Society of America." Both the Mayor’s
letter and the Borough President’s
Proclamation were read aloud.
Celebration featured a wide variety of entertainment:. The evening
opened with very special musical performance
by world famous pianist Mr. Farhad Badalbayli,
violinist Toghrul Ganiyev and classical
singers Gulnaz Ismayilova and Azar Zeynalov.
Direct from Baku, Sharg Ulduzlari, a children's
troupe, performed traditional and modern
songs and dances in opulent costumes and
famous singer Nushaba Aleskarli performed
backed by a trio of musicians led by outstanding
accordionist Elshan Dadashev. For children
and adults, internationally known magician
Ramon entertained with up close magic.

The Azerbaijan Society of America (ASA), established in 1957 in
USA, is a non-profit organization dedicated
to enhancing knowledge about Azerbaijan,
the Azeri people, their culture, and history
as well as promoting ties in economic,
cultural, and scientific spheres between
the Republic of Azerbaijan and the United
States. The ASA works with various organizations,
associations, ethnic and religious groups
to enhance intercultural understanding
and to promote peace in the Caucasus.
