The video documentary, "The
Woman with an Electronic Fetter" (Elektronik Prangali Kadin),
derives its name from the electronic fetter worn by Fugen Gulertekin
during her period of domestic confinement prior to her imprisonment
in jail. The documentary outlines FugenŐs story, from the treatment
that she was subjected to by Columbus, Ohio authorities and media,
to the implausible (and terrifyingly unjust) trial verdict and
8-year prison sentence she ultimately received. Haluk Sahin investigates
both the apparent and less apparent reasons and implications for
this shocking outcome, including the complications inherent in
the preceding chain of events and the weaknesses of the trial.
Participants: Fugen Gulertekin, Erdal Gulertekin, Zelis Gulertekin,
Tom Tyack, Nancy Erickson. Interviewed and hosted by Haluk Sahin.
ŇThe Woman with an Electronic FetterÓ was produced and edited
by Haluk Sahin, and shot in Columbus and New York, for
"Arena", Turkey's leading weekly investigative television news
program (Kanal D) in Istanbul, Turkey. Series producer and director
for "Arena": Ugur Dundar.
The documentary sheds light on the many dimensions of Fugen GulertekinŐs
story, including that of being a foreigner in the US and the complications
of the US legal system for a foreigner. It also shows how this
tragic circumstance can befall a person far more easily than we
would like to think.
