Narrative Biography of Bircan ÜNVER

Bircan Ünver is the originator (1999) and founder (2001) of The Light Millennium (“LM”) organization <www.lightmillennium.org>. She has been the executive producer and director of the LM since its inception and is the [Head] NGO representative of the organization to the United Nations Department of Public Information since its association. Also, she is the originator of the ISIKBINYILI.ORG (conceptually Turkish version of the Light Millennium with an original content), which has become an independent association according to the Turkish Law based in Istanbul, Turkey (January 2010), and as a sister organization with The Light Millennium.
She developed, conducted, designed, e-produced, and promoted over 57 e-magazines under the LM both in English and Turkish. Also, originated, developed, produced and co-produced near to 70 various cultural and educational public events in collaborations with various non-governmental organizations and major universities such as Columbia, NYU, CUNY, Baruch, Yale, Princeton. Also, she collaborated with the Turkish Consulate General of New York, Turkish Culture and Tourism Office as well as Sweden Consulate General of NY. Led four events during the 59th, 60th, 65th and 66th Annual UN/DPI-NGO Conferences on behalf of The Light Millennium Organization.
Further, she is member of the <www.undpingoconference.org/> "UN/DPI-NGO Annual 59th, 60th, and 61st Conference Planning Committees, and member of the Multi-Generational(2006), Media, and Events & Fundraising sub-committees in 2006, 2007 and 2015. As a result, she produced/shown and promoted of her UNNGO Profiles as 7 half-hour episodes under the LMTV at QPTV. Furthermore, she e-published and/or promoted/e-distributed numerous pieces from the UN DPI/NGO Conferences on the LM’s website. Additionally, served for three consecutive years to the NGO Committee on Mental Health - Working Group’s Annual programs, which took place at the UN-Church Center (NYC) in (April) 2007, 2008, and 2009. Since 2012, she is a member of the Global Movement Culture of Peace (GMCoP) and actively has served in the 2013 and 2014 Planning Committees of the High-Level Forum on the Culture of Peace.
Ms. Ünver received Field and Studio Production certificates from Queens Public Television (QPTV) in 1992. Also, she received relevant technologically updated trainings including post-production over the years. Since 1992, she has produced, directed and edited more than 140 original programs, both in studio and field and aired them on QPTV’s four channels (#34/35/56/57 - currently through TimeWarner, RCN and FIOS cale channels) in Queens. She launched The Light Millennium TV Series (“LMTV” monthly) at QPTV on Jan. 13, 2000 under the umbrella of The Light Millennium, and won several awards for her programs. Since January 2000, LMTV has both presented monthly, weekly series along with specials. In 2012, LMTV has expanded to as a weekly series (later in 2016 to a bi-weekly) to Manhattan Network Neighborhood - MNN.Org.
Nations to Nations Network (NNN, UN affiliated NGO) awarded Ms. Ünver for her “Exceptional Lifelong Service” during its "Fourth Annual International Diaspora Award Dinner Gala: ‘Bridge-Building across Cultures” in New York City on October 13, 2011.
In 2012, she received "Production Aid Grant" from QPTV, and produced two one-hour studio town-hall programs with the given support. In 2013, received three awards from QPTV on February 28, 2013. In 2015, she was the winner of the National Hometown Media Awards in the "Independent Producers" and "Educational Activities" category for her program, "MDGs & Atatürk", which was produced based on the two-day International Conference titled, "Pioneer of the Millennium Development Goals: Atatürk" Conference's Inaugural Session (April 19-20, 2013).
Moreover, she is the author of a draft envisioned proposal for a United Nations Non-Governmental Organizations - General Assembly - UNNGOGA - www.unngoga.org.
Further, Ms. Ünver is Ambassador of Peace and Goodwill for ANUVIBHA, Anuvrat Global Organization, Jaipur, India (since 2014 to present).
Holds a Master’s Degree (M.A.) from Media Studies of the New School University. Her thesis project was a half-hour documentary titled “ALL IDEAS: Freedom of Expression in Turkey” (1999). She has a B.A. degree is in Fine Arts from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in Istanbul, Turkey (1988).
As an art journalist, she had numerous articles and interviews appeared in print in various Turkish monthly art magazines and some daily newspapers from 1984 to 1989 in Turkey. She compiled her articles, interviews, and essays in a book titled "En Kutsali Yaratmak" (The Most Sacred is to Create) in Turkish, published by SAY Publishing House in Istanbul in 1995. Also, as her second book, "Sanatın Labirentlerinde..." (The Labyrinths of Arts..) published in Istanbul in 2016, and displayed during the 35th Tuyap Istanbul Book Fair at the SayKitap stand (Nov.12-20, 2016). The book was previously e-published on Isikbinyili.Org in 2008.
Her passion has continued in arts over the years through producing several art documentaries based on some major 'temporary exhibitions' from Metropolitan Museum of Art and Modern Museum of Arts in New York (Videography).
Since 2000, other than “Lightmillennium.Org” and “Isikbinyili.Org”, also her interviews, essays and articles appeared on various on-line websites and in print such as Turkish Times, Sanathaber.Net, Oytrabzon.Com, dPaper, Portreler, Paylasim, HurriyetUSA, Odaksevgi.Org, TurkCelil.Com, TurkishLifeNews.Com, Yerelce, and more in the US and Turkey, also in Europe (Belgium).
And, beside hosting and/or conducting interviews for the LMTV programs, also appeared on CNNTurk (Istanbul, 2005); Yeni Ufuklar, Turkish Radio TV-International (2006) and Channel#6 (Istanbul, 2009) in Istanbul, Turkey. Queens, NY: "Voices of People", "Off Balance", “Queens Update: First Amendment” – Town Hall Live Show on Nov. 5, 2010; “Queens Update: Gun Control” on March 29, 2011; and also several other community television programs such as "The Anthi Spanos Show", "Highlights Please", QPTV's own production "2013 Mixer Party" "Digital Media" shows, and more.
Based on her works and commitments through The Light Millennium, Ms. Ünver made several presentations (power point, poetry presentation, special screenings...), delivered keynote statements, and gave lectures:
In New York, New Jersey and Connecticut such as events organized in collaborations with Turkish Consulate General in New York, New York Turkish Tourism and Culture Office and Turkish Federation (Turkish House and Turkish Art Gallery 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005);
New York University (2002), CUNY Graduate Center (2006, 2007, 2010, 2014), Baruch College (May and June 2010), Columbia University (2006, 2008, 2009), Stevens Institute of Technology (2004, 2005, 2006, 2011, 2013), and Saint Peter's University (2015); and as the keynote speaker for the 93rd Anniversary Celebration of Republic of Turkey at Hartford Capitol through SNETACA.Org on October 28, 2016.

Born in 1959, the elder of six siblings. Mother of two sons and lives in Queens, New York since 1996.
Prior to 1996, she also lived for a year in Los Angeles (1989-1990), then in New York from Sept. 1990 to May 1993.
Raised, studied (B.A.) and worked in Istanbul until 1989.
