Pinar Ilkkaracan is a researcher and a human rights activist trained both in psychotherapy and political science. She is the founding president of Women for Women’s Human Rights (WWHR) – NEW WAYS, a women’s NGO that led various successful legal reforms in Turkey towards gender equality. She has created a nationwide human rights education program to enable women to exercise their rights in Turkey, which is implemented in 40 provinces of Turkey, especially for women living in poverty. She has contributed significantly to development of women’s human rights in various meetings of the United Nations both as NGO representative and as a member of Turkey’s official delegation.

In 2001 she has initiated the international network Coalition for Sexual and Bodily Rights in Muslim Societies (CSBR), a network of 45 leading academic and non-governmental organizations from 14 Muslim countries. Ilkkaracan is the editor of Women and Sexuality in Muslim Societies (translated into Arabic and Turkish) and Deconstructing Sexuality in the Middle East and the co-author of Gender and Sexuality; The Myth of the Warm Home: Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse and Human Rights Education for Women: Training Manual and the author of many other articles on gender equality and human rights.
She has received the prestigious International Women’s Human Rights Award of the Gruber Foundation in 2007 for her leadership for women’s rights at the global level.

International Coordinator, Coalition for Sexual and Bodily Rights in Muslim Societies (CSBR) 2002 - 2010
Coordinator and co-founder of an international network of forty-five academic institutes and NGOs in the Middle East, North Africa and South / Southeast Asia working on sexual, bodily and reproductive health and rights. Facilitated and coordinated international networking, designed and coordinated international comparative research, organized international meetings and conferences, planned and implemented strategic programs for promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights at national and international levels, organized international trainings and campaigns, prepared various publications, directed strategic planning, fund-raising, evaluation and reporting.

Highlights of the accomplishments of Pinar Ilkkaracan:

Executive Director, Women for Women’s Human Rights (WWHR) – NEW WAYS, Istanbul, Turkey 1994 - 2006
Co-Founder and executive director of women’s human rights NGO based in Turkey, working on local, national, regional and international levels. Responsibilities included:
• Initiating and coordinating advocacy and successful national campaigns for legal reforms towards gender equality, including the enactment for a law on domestic violence, reform of the civil code and the reform of the penal code from a gender perspective.
• Initiating and conducting research on violence against women and sexual abuse; women’s legal status; traditional harmful practices against girls and women; customary and religious practices affecting women and girls; sexual and reproductive health.
• Initiating and coordinating advocacy for women’s and girls’ human rights on the international level, including at the United Nations level;
• Coordination and writing of shadow reports for the UN CEDAW Committee;
• Producing publications on various issues related to women’s and girls’ human rights;
• Designing and directing a national human rights education training program for women and girls implemented in 42 provinces of Turkey in cooperation with the Directorate of Social Services;
• Organization of national and international conferences;
• Strategic planning, fund raising, management and development of a large team and evaluation of programs.


National Research Coordinator, Women and Law Research Programme of the International Network of Women Living Under Muslim Laws 1994 - 1998


Coordinated and collaborated to develop research and advocacy strategies at national and international levels, including collection, analysis and dissemination of information on secular, religious and customary laws and practices impacting on the lives of Muslim women.

Political Coordinator and Counselor, Autonomous Women’s Shelter, Berlin, Germany 1989 - 1994
Initiated and organized local, national, continental and international political campaigns on violence against women, women’s and children’s human rights, anti-racism and immigrant women. Counselor for battered women and children, consisting mostly of immigrant women and children from developing countries.

Coordinator for Special Projects, Girls’ Center, Berlin, Germany - January - August 1989
Developed programs for young women and girls living in poverty. Organized political projects on cultural diversity supportive of young women and girls in the family, school and work life.
